Beltsville, MD: Across America, tens of thousands of farmers are planting cover crops, a time-tested method of revitalizing soil, curbing erosion, and managing pests. Bryan and Donna Davis love what cover crops have done for their corn/soybean rotation. The Grinnell, Iowa couple relies on rye and oats to feed their soil and manage pests on their 1,000-acre, mostly no-till farm. “We have cut our chemical costs cut dramatically, and have reduced fertility costs in some fields by half” says Bryan. “With energy costs these days, you can’t afford not to do this.”

Revised and updated in 2007, the 3rd edition includes a new chapter on brassicas and mustards, 16 farm profiles, and a comprehensive chapter on the use of cover crops in conservation tillage systems. Updates throughout are based on more than 100 new literature citations and consultations with cover crop researchers and practitioners around the country. Appendices include seed sources and a listing of cover crop experts.

“This is the best book I have ever read,” says Wolfgang Rougle, of Twining Tree Farm in Cottonwood California. “It uses science to explain complex concepts, lays out options for different systems and climates, and allows innovative farmers to digest the information and make their own intelligent decisions. Thank you for the practical advice, acknowledgement of complex tradeoffs, specifics, details and conclusions.”

Boy Scouts of America has played an integral role for many males in the United States (this can also be said, of course, for the Girl Scouts of America and females). In an article by Dave Banks, he asks if the Boy Scouts are still relevant to our society.

These types of organizations, that may seem out of date and (unfortunately) out of place in a high-speed, high-tech world, are arguably very relevant and important to our next generation. The skills that are taught, the emphasis on community awareness and involvement, the incorporation of time spent between fathers and sons, mothers and daughters, are an integral part of our society, our history, or culture, and our country.

READ “After 100 Years, are the Boy Scouts Still Relevant” HERE.

By: Tisha Casida

YOU CANNOT HAVE BOTH LIBERTY & EQUALITY

Part of the problem in the United States is that there are two competing notions that are impossible to forge together. We cannot all be equal and at the same time all have liberty. It would be impossible to make sure that every citizen, consumer, and constituent of our country are equal without evading the liberty of these same people. These issues are facing us now – with what is happening in our economy and our health care system. Making everything equal, forced by the heavy hand of government, will in fact encroach on the liberty of many more people than those that are said to be given this equality. Such a movement is made on the platform of social justice, and inherent rights of American citizens. Our rights are liberty and the pursuit of happiness, as justified by the Constitution of the United States of America – nothing more.

Social justice often cries for equality. Unfortunately, just as there is a scarcity of resources, there are limits and constraints as to how “equal” we can be. Civil rights has nothing to do with social justice. Civil rights are HUMAN RIGHTS – something that I and any other God-fearing human being believe in. Social justice, and even environmental justice, are battle cries that are often communicated by great people with great causes. However, it is impossible to make everyone equal. There can be equal opportunity, but still, not everyone will be equal, and thus, not everyone will always be happy. This is a hard and painful lesson to learn, but the truth. We CAN all be free. FREEDOM and the opportunity to pursue happiness is the basis for our country. We are all equal on the level of human and civil rights, beyond that, our FREEDOM allows us to create the life that we want to lead. The equality of income, opportunity, political class, and social class are impossible.

To me, liberty is much more important than equality. Liberty, justice, and the opportunity to PURSUE happiness, are all we can ask for. That is what this country is all about – you can find it in our constitution, and the relatively free market that makes it possible to write and read this book.

PUEBLO — Dana Perino hasn’t stopped moving since she left the White House. The former White House press secretary for the Bush administration spends her Tuesdays with Sean Hannity as a news analyst in the studios of Fox News. She also devotes one day a month to a consulting firm providing strategic communications advice to the private sector. The rest of her days are spent delivering speeches, running a mentoring program she organized for young career women, as well as contributing political commentary to The Washington Post, Politico.com and The National Review.

Perino said the next generation of voters will have to tackle the financial situation we’ve created by overspending.

“Sooner or later we’ll run out of other peoples money to spend.” She also said that the threat of terrorism will continue to loom. “The odds are stacked against us,” she said of the threat of another terrorist attack.

Here at The Good American Post, we believe in less taxes. Why? The government is getting quite a bit of money from us taxpayers already, and they have not done a great job of budgeting this. They haven’t even done a bad job – it is actually criminal what they have done.

The current health care bill raises taxes on people that our current administration promised to protect. See a great synopsis of the debate going on right now at: Americans for Tax Reform.

After seeing the GMC commercial on television, it finally hit me. I will never purchase another Chevy again. I have had a GMC vehicle since I had my learner’s permit. My family is a Chevy-family. Even now, you will see over eight GMC vehicles parked at my family’s residence.

But GMC took the easy-road-out for their bad business decisions. And they accepted money that was not theirs to “fix” their problems – a “fix” that is in fact having the most inefficient operation on earth (government) run their “for-profit” enterprise. As a small-business-owner and entrepreneur, I find that quite distasteful, as they would never save my company from bankruptcy. They would let me fall and fail, and believe it or not, I would accept that, as I am not going to cry about bad decisions on my part.

I looked forward to purchasing another Chevy vehicle at some point in time, I was eying those new Cameros and the Chevy Volt would be awesome. But, I will NEVER support an American company that stole money from middle-class Americans, both in the form of a bailout, as well as cheating long-time stockholders of their company (stockholders that WERE NOT PART OF THE UNION). That is unfair to the investors, unfair to the consumer, and pathetic. So, bye-bye Miss American Pie – No More Chevies for me.

As we watch the Dow Jones “plummet” and show the volatility of the market right now – the news-casters and reporters could make one feel like the end of the world is near.

What is really going on here?

Why in the world do we get so swept up in “the market” which has no name and no face?

Although I do not have any investments in these mechanisms, I know that many do. All of this, is supposedly tied to the Greek protests and the potential “collapse” of the financial system in Europe.

Our extreme wealth in this country has come because of the globalization of our world. This is not necessarily bad or necessarily good. One thing is for certain – we cannot change what has happened.

However, we could certainly look at “hedging” ourselves a little better in the future – instead of investing so much in the no-names and no-faces of the national/global stock-market we could invest LOCALLY with people who have names and faces, that we can call, talk to, and have confidence in (at least more confidence than in computers thousands of miles away).

This probably sounds idealistic. But I am sick and tired of having the media make me so afraid of everything! It is not THAT complex! If we at least attempt to have local banking systems, local food systems, etc. I bet we will find that instead of watching those darn green and red numbers all day we could feel much more confidant in our investments RIGHT HERE that require no numbers because we have names and faces.

We can do both – global and local – and we should, because being afraid and upset all the time is counter-productive to liberty, happiness, and the American way.
